Apple’s List Of Alternate Browsers Available To EU Users In iOS
iOS 17.4 brought a big change for EU users as it complies with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
For the first time, EU users can choose from more browsers, no longer stuck with WebKit-based engines like Safari.
Apple now allows browsers to use their own engines (like Blink for Chrome), so users have more flexibility, privacy options, and performance improvements.
This is a big deal for iOS users who have been locked into the WebKit system for years.
Apple’s full list of available browsers by country
Here’s the complete list of browsers available for EU users to choose from as of August 2024.
This list varies by country, but all browsers run their native engines and offer different experiences than Safari:

When you update to iOS 17.4, you’ll see a random browser choice screen where you can pick a new default browser.
This list will be different for each country and based on user behavior.
If you change your mind later, you can go to Settings > Browser
to switch back.
Why this matters for EU users?
This update is Apple’s response to the Digital Markets Act, which requires platforms like iOS to provide alternatives to their built-in apps and services. For EU users, this means:
- More browsers: You can now choose non-WebKit browsers with extra features and performance that were not available on iOS before.
- Customization: With the ability to switch browsers and run native engines you have more control over your browsing experience.
- Competition: By allowing different engines to run, the browser market becomes more competitive, and innovation will follow.
Why native browser engines matter?
Until now, even third-party browsers on iOS, like Chrome and Firefox, had to use Apple’s WebKit engine.
With iOS 17.4, Apple removes this restriction for EU users. This means:
- Chrome now runs its Blink engine, so you get the same performance and features as on desktop and Android.
- Firefox’s Quantum engine powers the iOS version, which offers better speed, memory usage, and privacy.
These native engines are more secure, faster, and more flexible than the WebKit versions. If you prefer these browsers you can now get the full experience as intended by the developers.
How to change your default browser in iOS 17.4
Here’s how to change your default browser:
- Open any browser after updating to iOS 17.4.
- You’ll be prompted with a browser choice screen.
- Select the browser you prefer.
- To change it later, go to
Settings > Browser
and choose a new default.
Additional iOS 17.4 changes for EU users
The new browser choice screen is just one part of Apple’s answer to the Digital Markets Act. Other changes in iOS 17.4 include:
- Alternative App Marketplaces: Users can download apps from other stores, not just the App Store.
- Default Payment Apps: Users can now select a default payment app for contactless payments, adding more flexibility beyond Apple Pay.
These changes give you more customization and control, a more competitive and open platform for EU users.
Conclusion
iOS 17.4 marks a significant shift in how Apple approaches user choice in the European Union.
By adding more browsers to the list and removing the WebKit restriction, Apple gives EU users more control and innovation.
Now the door is open for a future where Apple’s ecosystem is more open and more flexible, driven by regulation and user demand.
For now, EU users are the lucky ones. The rest of the world will have to wait and see if this flexibility will be rolled out globally.
